vaccines may cause an immunosuppression with lymphopaenia, impaired cytokine production and defective lymphocyte response to mitogenes. These abnormalities were described in subjects vaccinated against measles. This study was performed to analyse the host immune response related to immunosuppression in subjects vaccinated with live attenuated rubella vaccine. Methods: Eighteen schoolgirls, aged 11 /13 years, were vaccinated with live attenuated rubella vaccine Rudivax † . Before immunization, and 7 and 30 days after, peripheral blood was collected. Cellular fractions were subjected to flow cytometric analysis, and the lymphocyte response to phytohaemagglutinin was investigated. Plasma samples were analysed for cytokines (interleukin (IL)-4, IL-10, tumour necrosis factor-a, and interferon-g) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay techniques. Results: On day 7 after vaccination, the number of each lymphocyte subset was decreased; however, only for CD3 and CD4 lymphocytes has a significant reduction been shown. On the contrary, tumour necrosis factor-a and IL-10 levels markedly increased and amounted to its maximum on day 30. Simultaneously, a significant reduction in plasma interferong and a profound decrease of the lymphocyte response to phytohaemagglutinin were shown. The changes were accompanied with marked elevation of plasma IL-4. Conclusions: Our data indicate that the vaccination with live attenuated rubella vaccine results in moderate but sustained immune disturbance. The signs of immunosuppression, including defective lymphocyte response to mitogene and impaired cytokine production, may persist for at least 1 month after vaccination.

regulated by the corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards, established during the energy crises of the 1970s. Calls to increase fuel economy are usually met by a fierce debate on the effectiveness of the CAFE standards and their impact on highway safety. A seminal study of the link between CAFE and traffic fatalities was published by R. W. Crandall and J. D. Graham in 1989. They linked h...
متن کاملCorporate Average Fuel Economy Standards and the Market for New Vehicles
This paper presents an overview of the economics literature on the effect of Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards on the new vehicle market. Since 1978, CAFE has imposed fuel economy standards for cars and light trucks sold in the U.S. market. This paper reviews the history of the standards, followed by a discussion of the major upcoming changes in implementation and stringency. It d...
متن کاملClearing the air: The costs and consequences of higher CAFE standards and increased gasoline taxes
Concerns about energy security and climate change have sparked legislators’ interest in reducing gasoline consumption by increasing corporate average fuel-economy (CAFE) standards. Using an empirically rich simulation model and cost estimates for anticipated fuel-economy technologies, we estimate annual costs of reducing long-run gasoline consumption by 10% via a 3.8 miles per gallon increase i...
متن کاملThe Cost of Reducing Gasoline Consumption
High nominal gas prices, new awareness of threats to national security, and growing concern about global warming have reignited discussion of ways to reduce gasoline consumption in the United States. Debate centers on changing two policies already in place: the federal gas tax and Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. Two influential recent reports find that increasing the gas tax wo...
